Youngin' was getting bigger. his fangs were longer. He could jump higher. He was stronger and faster and becoming more so everyday. It was getting close to his last chance before winter to hunt something bigger. He was almost reluctant to rush through his childhood so, but he wanted to prove his self to the world. He was going after a deer. A large one. He got his chance after only an hour of looking, and he stealthily followed his prey until he was close enough to strike. He had done this much several times before. He had come close more times than he wished to recall. Each time the others encouraged him to stick with smaller prey. He would do it this time. There would be one more dead deer soon. He jumped out from his cover and got a good hold on the deers neck. It kicked him twice and he was forced to let go. A trail of blood led him to it even at his slow pace. He bit into its back leg and let go again. It fell. He had won. He was about to celebrate when he thought of something. He felt like an idiot when he realized his prey was far larger than he was. Had he chased it towards the village and not given it a chance to injure him he might have been able to drag it back but he was far from the village and, as he now realized, badly injured. Only one thing to do. Walk back and ask Kyra or someone for help. Now if only he could stand up again...

A rustle of leaves came in the distance, soon followed by the sound of two wolves talking to each other. A moment later, the two newcomers came into view. It was a young wolf... and Kyra!
The elder wolf marched into view, urging the small wolf onwards, "Come on, we cannot be too late else our absence will be examined!"
"But Kyra..."
A small shuffle of movement caught the practiced eye of the elder. "Who's there?" The fish clamped in her mouth fell mercilessly to the ground. The moonlight reflected easily in her shiny depths and she easily spotted the hulking mass of a fallen deer. Yet, besides the deer, upon closer inspection - Kyra squinted slightly, her eyes becoming cat-like slits of silver - she saw the small figure of... "Maximus?"
Her companion's ears perked at the name. "Youngin'! Is it you?" All fish lay forgotten as the two made their way towards their injured friend.

"Ye~ OW." As he struggled to stand Maximus attempted to look uninjured and caused himself instead to look even more weak than he felt he was. "I'm sorry. I tried for something to big and too strong." He clamped his teeth together as he began defying gravity once more, but, just as he had managed to stand up and began to walk towards Kyra he saw his deeper wound for the first time. He was bleeding. This wasn't supposed to happen! He had failed worse than he thought. He took last one step and fell again. He gave up to his pressing sub-conscience and fainted.

Right against her left flank, he fell. The sight of blood sent the other young one into a frenzy. It was giving her a headache.
"Hush," she commanded fiercely, understanding what had happened. Immediately, the young wolf fell silent, trembling in fear. She left strict instructions for the small wolf to stay by his friend's side, and quickly bounded into the surrounding forest. Reappearing only moments later with some leaves, Kyra chewed furiously on the plants, mushing it to a pulp, being careful not to swallow as it would defeat the purpose. Dabbing the mushy remains onto the gaping wound, she scowled.
"Will he be alright?"
"Yes, but we need to return him to camp." The still fairly young silvery wolf glanced over at the small frame before her. Muttering more to herself than anything, she shook her head "Why do they always think they're better than they really are, I'll never understand..." She easily staunched the flow of blood from Youngin's gash and sighed.
Her lively companion, however, was a furball of energy and wouldn't keep still. "How will we bring the deer back? And will he live? Did Youngin' really bring that great deer down?"
A slicing glare from Kyra calmed him down. "Carry as many fish with you as you can handle." The bouncing furry mass visibly wilted having completely forgotten about their catch. "Maximus here," Kyra gave a scoff of disapproval. "He will live. Now go pick up the fish. We will send some of our clan back to bring the deer." When the small runt refused to move, Kyra growled in annoyance. "Go!"
Together, they continued on their way again. The small wolf with the fish, and Kyra with Youngin' held protectively by his fur in her jaws as a mother holds her pup.
The welcome back ceremony was hectic. Kyra sent the small wiggling mass of her companion to drop of their catch as she deposited Maximus with the resident Healer.
"What did he do this time," the wise wolf asked in a wispy voice, amusement raking her eyes.
"He took down an animal more than twice his size," Kyra explained wearily. "A deer." The elder wolf looked up from the wounds with surprise.
"A deer?"
Tiredly, Kyra nodded her reply. "I've sent some of our clan out to fetch it." The midnight-blue wolf stretched, her claws digging into the earth. She mused, "Fetching Maximus... that'll be my next assignment, won't it?"
She left the Healer's den, and made her way to her clearing seeking a place of refuge. Unfortunately, a furry mass slammed into her flanks as soon as she entered her den. It was her companion. He wanted to know about Broud.
With a sigh, Kyra pawed her muzzle in defeat. This was going to be one long night.

His eyes flickered open. "Kyra! Where?... What?... oh. Right." He saw then his father staring at him. "Two days.", his father said coolly, "thats how long you have to heal. After that you're going back to small things." "But, Dad .. " Youngin' began to protest by was cut off immediately by "Do you think now that you mister big bad hunter killed one deer your ready to go against them again? Or is it time to move on to bears?", his father scowled. "I'll have none of it. You made one mistake, so you shall not make another because of it." His father stormed off again to be alone, as he so often did." Youngin' had failed. Again. Several minutes later he was sleeping again. Dreaming of his father's nightmare. Someday he would take on a bear. Someday.

Meanwhile, Kyra, tucked comfortably against the warm fur of Snuffles finished her tale.
"Oh wow, now I can't wait for the great Clan Gathering... I wonder what Broud will do. What do you think, Kyra?" Snuffles gently licked his friend's darkened muzzle.
Murmuring sleepily through her half-lidded eyes, Kyra gave a weak wolfish smile. "We shall see - all we can do now is to wait and see..."
"And of Youngin'? Do you think he'll try at a deer again?" Without waiting for her reply, the young wolf went off imagining joining his friend in an epic hunt.
Quietly, Kyra laughed saying, "Deer - just you wait, oh sidekick of his, Snuffles. Just you wait. Next thing you know, he'll be leaping after bears!" At this, Snuffle's eyes widened in amazement. Even though she was joking, Kyra shook her head in amusement and drifted away into dreams.

Youngin' felt better already. He normally healed quickly, but it was getting even faster as of late. He had asked his healer if he would be alright. The answer was “maybe. You'll be lucky if you don't have scars for life.” His father had scars too... but not from something as weak as a deer. It was tradition in his family to wander far from home to fight great beasts far away. His father had told him of bears that were white and green in a distant land far North. He had scars from fighting with one of them. He hoped his scars would disappear soon. He never wanted to tell his children of how he got scars from fighting a deer. He wanted to have scars from the monsters of the great waters or a mighty grizzly. Something that would be worthy of injuring him. He could only hope. He dreamed of fighting the largest monsters the world over, like his fathers for many generations: He would be strong.

Augustus entered the room and ordered his son to follow. "I have decided," he began, "that you will be chasing deer. If you wish to become a better hunter you will need to be faster. You are not to kill anything for the next several weeks." He walked away as his son followed (yeah... I know... powergaming myself... *hopes its allowed*) He went to the highest hill around with his son to find deer to chase. They would be chasing them all the way to the camp where others would be to catch what was needed for food.
Maximus was so excited right now. Chasing deer sounded like fun regardless of whether it would be the same as chasing rabbits. It made him feel bigger. Stronger. Faster. He would become all these: he knew. He just wished it would happen sooner. He was no good at being patient.
